Why was super smash bros so successful ?

My favorite game of all time is probably super smash bros melee on the Gamecube. The first game was super smash bros., which released in 1999 for the Nintendo 64.   It was first released on November 21, 2001 in Japan, right after the GameCube's launch. It was the second game in the series was my beloved super smash bros melee game. It was one of the most successful games of this decade. The reason it was so successful was because of the simplicity and yet the complexity of the game. To give you the numbers on how successful it was, here is the link to the sales figures from the super smash bros Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Smash_Bros._Melee). Why was this game so awesome you ask? Well the first thing is the new roster. It added 14 new charters to the roster. It also had the original 12 from super smash bros. There are 26 playable characters in the entire game. Not just made up characters, but characters from your favorite Nintendo video game series.  They added Zelda, Browser, Marth, and Falco just to name a few. It was revolutionary to put some of favorite characters together in one game, let alone a fighting game. The fascination of putting your favorite character against some like Pikachu and link made the game 10x more interesting. New fighting mechanics, led to a well-balanced and organized game. The other reason why I like super smash bros melee is the easy button combos. In most other games, you have to remember a 15 to 5 button combo just to get a move besides kick or punch. In super smash bros melee, the combos only have a 2 to 3 button combination. For example, A and the right analog stick, or B and the right analog stick, and etc.  There was not one over powered character on the roster. They might have over powered moves but they all had counters to those moves.  This led to tons of fun gameplay and a learning curve that made the game replay able. They also added 23 new maps. Every map played different one was never similar to the other. This meant you could play for hours at a time without having to be frustrated with linear gameplay.  The map design, iconic characters, and simple button design is why I loved super smash bros melee. Comment on why you liked super smash bros!
